Party with a Purpose
A Charleston Affair is not just the biggest party of the year, it’s a party with a purpose, supporting Alumni Association scholarships and programs as we honor the newest members of the Alumni Association.
Since 1961, the Alumni Association has provided scholarships to students attending the College of Charleston. The College of Charleston Alumni Association works to preserve and promote the College’s traditions. Gather in Cistern Yard at 8 pm as President Glenn McConnell ’69 toasts the Class of 2018 and we proudly sing the alma mater. Not sure you remember the words? Brush up with the video below, recorded by talented alumnus Will Jones ‘86.
Dance under the stars to live music by the incredible band, Fantasy, in Cistern Yard, and DJ YNot in Cougar Mall. Fantasy will be playing beach music from 7-8 pm, so celebrate South Carolina’s state dance and plan to enter our shag contest or to take free lessons from alumni experts from the Charleston Shag Club.
For the past six years, A Charleston Affair has coordinated with the College of Charleston’s Office of Sustainability to reduce the event’s carbon footprint. By composting leftover food and paper goods, recycling plastics, and reusing/repurposing signage, staging, flowers, and decorations, the Alumni Association demonstrates its commitment to preserving and protecting the environment.
This year, we’ll even recycle the floral arrangements! rEvent, an organization started by alumna Bella Slagsvol ’10, provides free pick-up and delivery service for event planners and hosts to collect event materials that can be repurposed by local charitable organizations.
