FAQs

If you’ve got questions, we’ve got answers. And if we don’t address your query below, please contact us.

Where should I stay?

If you are traveling in from out of town, then check out the sponsor hotels to book your reservation.

How can I purchase tickets to Spring Alumni Weekend events?
Most events are open to students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends. However, due to space limitations, only students confirmed to graduate in May or Summer 2019 by February 15 and alumni are invited to purchase tickets to A Charleston Affair.

What is the purpose of A Charleston Affair?
First held in 1900, the Alumni Reception—or A Charleston Affair as it is now known—is held each May to welcome the graduating students into the Alumni Association. Any proceeds from Spring Alumni Weekend events will benefit programs and scholarships for the College.

As an alumna/alumnus, how may I purchase tickets to Spring Alumni Weekend events?
Alumni who made a donation of $25 or more to support the College between July 1, 2018, and February 15, 2019, will receive an email the week of March 4, 2019, containing a custom access code to purchase tickets early. Non-donor alumni will receive an email the following week containing a custom access code to purchase tickets.

As a member of the Class of 2019, how may I purchase tickets to A Charleston Affair?
Students whose application to graduate in May or Summer were submitted and approved by February 15, 2019, will be invited to purchase tickets to A Charleston Affair in two flights: members of Committed to Charleston (C2C) will receive an email the week of March 4, 2019, containing a custom access code to purchase tickets early; non-C2C members will receive an email the following week containing a custom access code to purchase tickets. The custom access code will allow graduating students to purchase up to two tickets total: one “Class of 2019” ticket per person at a special price of $75 and one General Admission guest ticket for $100 (all guests must be age 21 by May 4, 2019). The special price “Class of 2019” ticket will only be available through Friday, March 8, 2019. After that date, regular pricing prevails. The special price “Class of 2019” ticket is non-transferable and will not be honored unless the valid, government-issued photo ID matches the name on the ticket. In other words, you can’t re-sell it or give it to someone else—it may only be used by you. Regular price tickets are transferable.

What if I am approved to graduate in May or Summer 2019, but will not be age 21 by May 4, 2019?
The Registrar’s office provides a list of students approved to graduate who will not be age 21 in time for A Charleston Affair. Alumni Affairs staff members contact these students to make special exceptions for them to attend and enjoy the event.

May members of the Class of 2019 May/Summer grads bring guests to A Charleston Affair?
Yes, but you must purchase a ticket for your guest and your guest must be age 21 as of May 4, 2019. No exceptions are made for guests on age.

May members of the Class of 2019 May/Summer grads purchase VIP tickets to A Charleston Affair?
Yes, but at the regular prevailing rate. Remember to purchase the same type of ticket for your guest, if applicable. Only guests with VIP tickets are allowed into VIP areas. Violators will be escorted outside of A Charleston Affair.

May members of the Class of 2019 May/Summer grads attend other Spring Alumni Weekend Events?
Absolutely! You are also invited to attend the Alumni Association Annual Meeting (free of charge) on Saturday, May 4, from 12:30-2 pm, at the Simons Center Recital Hall. There will be door prizes, including extra tickets to commencement.

Will tickets be sold at the door?
Ticket sales will end when events are sold out or on Friday, April 26, 2019, whichever comes first. No tickets will be sold at the door. There are a limited number of tickets available to many events, so act fast!

What is the refund policy?
All Spring Alumni Weekend ticket sales are final and are not refundable. Ticketed events will take place rain or shine.

Can I purchase tickets from a third party?
We discourage guests from purchasing tickets from third parties, such as Craigslist and Facebook. Evenings have been ruined over ticket fraud at A Charleston Affair. If you don’t personally know—and trust—the person selling you the ticket, please don’t buy it. Please see the ticket policy that prohibits reselling/transfer of the special price “Class of 2019” tickets.

What do I need to bring to events to check in?
All guests must bring a valid, government-issued photo ID to be checked upon entry. Guests are asked to bring printed tickets to speed up the scanning process. Be aware that possessing a fraudulent ID is a serious crime in South Carolina and also violates the College of Charleston Student Code of Conduct.

May I leave an event and re-enter?
No, if a guest departs the event, re-entry is not permitted.

Is tobacco or smoking allowed on campus?
No, the College of Charleston campus and all Alumni Weekend events are drug, tobacco, and smoke free. This includes cigars, vaping, etc.

Will parking be available near the event?
As always, limited parking will be available near campus. City of Charleston parking garages. We recommend that you walk, Uber, Lyft, pedi-cab, or taxi to the event.

What if it rains?
Ticketed events will take place rain or shine. In case of an emergency, we will update you via email.

What is the attire?
Appropriate attire and shoes are required for all events. Friday evening’s many events are “business casual.” For the Champagne Brunch, think “nice restaurant.” For A Charleston Affair, think “garden party” (not “night club,” please!). All events are held on a variety of uneven surfaces, so avoid wearing uncomfortable shoes or heels.

What’s on the menu?
The menu is traditional, southern-inspired cuisine, including vegetarian and vegan options. Check out the menu for this year’s event!

What time should I arrive for A Charleston Affair?
Gates open at 7 pm sharp. Please refer to the map to identify your entry gate.

Is there a social media hashtag we should use?
Use #CharlestonAffair for everything; outfit options, dancing up a storm, running into that friend you haven’t seen in forever—post it all!

Will there be a professional photographer?
Yes, CofC alumnus Clifford Pate and his team will be on hand for candid shots as well as Step-and-Repeat photos with Clyde. You can view and purchase all photos through Clifford Pate Photography after the event.
